Is Your Child Ready to Stay Home Alone?

So your child has hit the age where they are allowed to stay home and want to, but are they really ready? Are you really ready to leave them?

Here are the top five questions you and your child need to ask

1) Is your child ready to stay home alone?

You want to feel like your child has the confidence to handle a situation if it arises, you want to know they are safe and know they are comfortable.

2) What is the 5 Step rule?

Giving your child guidance can help them through a situation or emergency

3) Is it an Emergency?

It is so important that your child knows when a situation is an emergency and when it is not.

A mom told me a story of her son staying home for the first time the other day and he called screaming there was an emergency at home, once everyone had calmed down they realized the emergency was one of daddy’s fish had jumped out of the fish tank.

4) Uh Oh, I hurt myself!!!

You want your child to know the appropriate steps to help themselves or a sibling if an accident does occur.

5) Do you have a code word?

Your family should have a special code word in case a stranger or they are unsure about someone coming to the door.

If all of this is overwhelming do you know that there are one day courses your child can attend to help them build the skills and confidence they need.

The Home Alone Safety for Kids program helps children and their families get ready for their child’s first steps towards independence and being without adult supervision.
